BASIS Installation Guide For Microsoft Windows Operating Systems **************************************************************** Last Update: December 1, 2000. Part 1: BASIS License Manager (BLM) Installation (Multiuser) Note: part 1 is for BLM installation and multiuser license request, registration, delivery and installation. See Part 2 for single-user product instructions. Part 2: Product Installation Part 3: Emergency Licensing Procedures Part 4: Licensing Terms Process Description ******************* Visual PRO/5(R), PRO/5 Data Server(R) for Windows, and the BASIS ODBC Driver(R) revision 2.10 and higher use FLEXlm licensing software. The FLEXlm End User Manual is included in the provided online documentation. It can be accessed from the FLEXlm End User Manual entry in the table of contents. The Globetrotter Software web site (www.globetrotter.com) contains an Adobe Acrobat version of the manual, as well as an online version that has full-text search capability. The installation process for these BASIS products includes: o Installation and configuration of the BLM. o Requesting the individual product licenses from BASIS. o Installing the individual product licenses. o Installing and configuring the products. Procedures for obtaining a temporary license in the event of an emergency are also included. What You Will Need ****************** If you purchased a BASIS product on CD, you will need the License Registration Form included for each product. If you have a BASIS product, revision 2.00 to 2.05, and are updating from our Web site to revision 2.10 or higher, you will need your existing serial number and activation key. If you downloaded a demonstration copy from our Web site, the demonstration license file is included. ****************************************************** Part 1: BASIS License Manager Installation (Multiuser) ****************************************************** The BLM is distributed on CD and from the Internet. BASIS licensing information is contained on the License Registration Form included with your BASIS product or by fax. 1 Insert the CD into the drive, or if you are downloading the BLM from the BASIS ftp site, unzip the self-extracting file into a temporary directory. 2 Run setup.exe to begin the installation. At the end of the installation process, the License Registration Wizard will start. The Wizard can also be started from the Windows Start button. Select Register for a BASIS License. Registering for the Permanent Multiuser License(s) ************************************************** To request a permanent multiuser license, use the License Registration Wizard to specify license registration, product license, registration method and license delivery method. The License Registration Wizard starts automatically after product installation. The License Registration Wizard can also be started from the Windows Start button. 1 Select Register for a BASIS License to display the Register For A BASIS License dialog. 2 If you have already received a demonstration license, check the box and click Next. Otherwise, click Next to move to the License Registration Information dialog. 3 Enter the information listed in the Contact Information section. (This is optional, unless the license is delivered by fax or e-mail.) This information is only used if an e-mail or fax transmission error occurs. 4 In the Product Information section, enter the serial number and license authorization number exactly as they appear on the License Registration Form that came with your BASIS product. 5 Optionally, enter a host name to associate a product serial number and host ID with an individual computer. 6 Click Next to display the License Registration and Delivery Methods dialog. 7 Under Registration Method, select Web Browser, e-mail, phone, fax or other to send the license information to BASIS. WEB BROWSER This is the fastest and therefore the preferred method. EMAIL The license request will be automatically sent to BASIS by e-mail. If you are working on a machine that does not have e-mail capability, you must select another method. If you are at a remote site that can experience delays in delivering e-mail, you may experience the same delay with the licensing process. In this situation, try registering by fax as well. PHONE This is an automated telephone registration system. Dial +1.505.338.4171 and follow the instructions. Fax capability is required for the automated system to return a permanent license. FAX This method saves the licensing information to a text file in a format for BASIS automatic fax-reading software. The text file can also be printed and faxed to 1.505.338.4178. The fax must be sent right-side up, inserting the top edge first. Increase the size of the characters as much as possible (16-point type is the minimum) without the text running outside the margins or onto a second page. Clean, enlarged photo copies can be used but any marks, streaks or handwritten notes on the page make it difficult for the automated system to read the file. OTHER This is a manual backup if the e-mail and fax methods are unavailable or fail. Save the registration information to a file and move it to another machine with printer access or e-mail. Fax the information to 1.505.345.5082 (NOT our automated fax number), or e-mail the file to license@basis.com, and BASIS will manually generate a permanent license. 8 If you selected E-mail To: as the registration method, indicate how BASIS should return the license file. Include your complete e-mail address or fax number. This method can be different than that specified in Registration Method. 9 Click OK to verify the registration information. 10 Click Next to continue. 10a If you selected E-mail Address or Fax Number in the Registration Method section but did not enter your name and telephone number in the Contact Information section, an Emergency Contact Information dialog will appear. This information is required and is only used if an e-mail or fax transmission error occurs. 10b If you selected Other as the registration method, a Save As dialog appears. Enter the destination path for the registration file and click Save. Move this registration file to a machine with Internet or printer access. E-mail the file to BASIS for an immediate reply, or print this file and fax it to BASIS during normal operating hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mountain time (-0700GMT). A permanent license will be returned by the e-mail or fax method selected. 12 If after 30 minutes you still have not received the permanent license information, try the remaining delivery methods. If you are still unable to obtain a permanent license, install the temporary license printed at the bottom of the BASIS License Registration Form until you receive the permanent license. 13 After registering for a license, a dialog appears to register for another BASIS license. If you have more than one BASIS product to license, click Yes to repeat the process. Otherwise, answer No and a dialog will appear to install the license. 14 If you are receiving a license by e-mail or the Web, save the file according to the accompanying instructions. If you are receiving information by fax, specific license installation instructions are printed on the faxed form. Click Next to continue. To install the license, select Yes. Installing the License(s) ************************* The BASIS License Installation dialog is used to locate the license file received from BASIS by e-mail or the Web, or to enter the license information received by fax. This license is valid for 60 days from the date of purchase from BASIS and you do not need to contact BASIS to install it. To install a 60-day temporary license, repeat the steps in Part 2. Manually enter the emergency license information on the included License Registration Form. Once the 60-day temporary license is running, call BASIS to request another permanent license. Immediate 7-Day Nag-Free License: A seven-day temporary license is available for system failures that invalidate your license. To install a seven-day temporary license, repeat the steps in Part 2. When additional requests are entered for the same serial number and authorization number, our automated system will generate a seven-day temporary license. Once the seven-day temporary license is running, call BASIS to request another permanent license. Part 4: Licensing Terms *********************** License Manager A FLEXlm term for the application that tracks the number of counted licenses in a network and which machines in the network are using those licenses at any one time. A license manager coordinates the issuing of these licenses to requesting clients at any given moment. See BASIS License Manager. BASIS License Manager BASIS' version of the FLEXlm license manager. The BLM software may be installed on the same server as the product(s) or on a dedicated license server machine. In the FLEXlm manual available in our online documentation (http://www.basis.com/devtools/documentation/index.html), the BLM is what FLEXlm calls a "vendor daemon." See License Manager. Counted license A FLEXlm term for a type of license that is tied to the computer running a license manager, such as the BLM, in a network. The license manager controls the use of counted licenses as they are needed throughout the network. BASIS sells counted licenses as "multiuser" licenses because the same license can "float" and be used by more than one UNIX terminal or Windows seat in a network. PRO/5® and the PRO/5 Data Server are sold only with counted licenses and, therefore, require the BLM. Uncounted license A FLEXlm term for a type of license that is tied to the computer running the BASIS product. This license does not require a license manager because it is "fixed" to a unique seat (the machine running the BASIS product) and cannot be used by any other machine in a network. BASIS sells uncounted licenses as "single-user" licenses because the license can only be used by this unique Windows seat. Unlicensed (nag) mode If a BASIS product cannot find a valid license, it displays a screen reporting the problem every 15 to 30 minutes. Users can continue to work when the product is in "nag mode." Temporary licenses are available that do not show this screen; see Part 3: Emergency Licensing Procedures. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (C) l985-2001 BASIS International Ltd.
