Downloading
The proper way to download a file varies from browser to browser
and from file to file. The first thing to try when starting a
download from one of our Web pages is to follow the provided
download link just as you would a link to another page. If your
browser then asks you where you want to save the file you're downloading,
just select the destination you want and wait for the download to
finish.
If your browser doesn't ask you where you want to save the
file, it will probably try to interpret the file as a Web page and
display it as garbage on your browser screen. At this point you can
-- and should -- stop the download and go back to the previous page.
Most of the modern GUI browsers offer a "Save Link As..." or "Save
Target As..." option that will save the target of the link as a file
no matter what kind of file it is. (Netscape and Internet Explorer
offer this option when you right-click on a link.)
If neither of these options work for you, you should use a
dedicated FTP client to visit our download area at ftp://ftp.basis.com/pub and
retrieve the file(s) you want. E-mail webmaster@basis.com if you have
questions about where on the FTP site you should go to find the
file(s) you want.
If your attempts to download a file fail completely (your browser
reports that the file does not exist, that the download timed out, etc.),
e-mail webmaster@basis.com with
details of what you were trying to do, what browser or FTP client you
were using, and what message(s) you got when your download failed. We
will do everything we can to get things working for you.
ZIP Archives
BASIS offers some online materials in the form of ZIP files. To
access these materials, you must use a ZIP file unpacker:
- Download the ZIP file to a temporary directory.
- Unpack the documentation using a ZIP unpacker appropriate to
your hardware and operating system. (Be sure to configure your
software to preserve the archive's directory hierarchy when unpacking.)
Archived HTML ZIP Archives
BASIS offers some of its electronic documentation in the form
of zipped HTML files. To read this documentation, you must use a
ZIP file unpacker and some kind of Web browser that allows you to read
HTML files from disk:
- Download the ZIP file to a temporary directory.
- Unpack the documentation using a ZIP unpacker appropriate to
your hardware and operating system. (Be sure to configure your
software to preserve the archive's directory hierarchy when unpacking.)
- Using your Web browser's "open file" option, open the
index.htm file in the top level of the
directory you just unpacked.
If you have comments or questions about BASIS' electronic documentation,
please e-mail info@basis.com.
Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations
Most of the presentations and slideshows available at this site are
in Microsoft PowerPoint format (.ppt files).
If you have a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint on your
machine, just download the files and load them into PowerPoint.
(Some browsers require that you "manually" download these files by
right-clicking on the link and selecting "Save Link As..." or "Save
Target As..." to save the file to your local disk.)
If you do not have PowerPoint, Microsoft offers a
PowerPoint presentation viewer as a free download. Visit the Microsoft
Viewer for PowerPoint 97 page at Microsoft's site for more
details.
Portable Document Format Files
BASIS offers some files in the PDF format,
which must be read with Adobe's Acrobat Reader application. This
reader is available for a broad variety of platforms from the Adobe
Acrobat Reader Page at the Adobe Systems Incorporated site.
