Technical Communique BASIS International
Date:  July 7, 2003
Subject:  BBj 3.01, Certified On the 1.4.2 JVM, Now Available
Number:  TC-03004

The 1.4.2 JVM significantly increases BBj's performance by using the new and faster Linux thread libraries, numerous bug fixes and memory leak fixes, improved garbage collection algorithms, and refactoring several portions of the 1.4.2 code. These enhancements provide BBj developers with faster starting, running, and file access times. For more information, see Java's 1.4.2 JVM white paper.

Windows XP Look and Feel
In addition, the 1.4.2 JVM provides a Windows XP look and feel. BBj 3.01 takes advantage of this XP look and feel by providing new development methods that produce modern and aesthetically appealing graphical interfaces, all with very little coding effort.

BBj IDE
The BBj IDE now includes added support for compiling programs, using BBx®4, PRO/5®, Visual PRO/5® and BBj compilers. An output window displays all compile-time errors as hyperlinks to the affected line in the source program. Double-clicking the link opens the source program in the IDE Source Editor and highlights the line containing the error. BASIS developers can now enjoy the full benefits of the BBj IDE while continuing to maintain and develop programs written in any BASIS language.

MDI
Additionally, BBj 3.01 offers the ability to dock client windows within the Multiple Document Interface (MDI). The docking feature binds an existing MDI client to any side of the MDI master window so that developers can create GUI modern application interfaces.

Language Enhancements
The OPEN verb now supports a PASSWD= mode option. This option provides increased security, preventing unauthorized BASIC programs from reading or writing private data records. This feature gives the developer a mechanism for protecting their data and determining whether unauthorized programs attempt to tamper with their files.

Licensing
Also available in BBj 3.01 is the new automatic license registration and installation feature. BASIS simplified the FLEXlm licensing process with a one-step licensing option. With an Internet connection, BASIS's licensing is as simple as point and click, saving time and money.

Lastly, this release of BBj resolves a number of bug fixes and quality assurance (QA) memos that detail known issues with the product.
