BASIS Makes Large File Format Available Multimedia Classroom Table of Contents Road Scholar Journals

ASIS MKEYED files are now virtually unlimited in size for several UNIX operating systems that comply with the large file support specification. With this new file structure, an MKEYED file can reach up to 1 billion gigabytes providing the operating system and hardware can support it.

BASIS has enhanced the MKEYED file driver in selected PRO/5® ports for UNIX to allow files created with this version of PRO/5 to automatically create files that can extend well beyond past limitations of 2 or 4 gigabytes. Existing MKEYED files can be converted to the large file format as well, using a new utility from BASIS. The new utility, mrebuild, can also be configured to automatically incorporate BASIS's highly recoverable file format into the converted file.

The BASIS ODBC Driver® is also able to take advantage of large files (which use a 64-bit file index) by accessing them through a UNIX PRO/5 Data Server® with large file support.

With support for large files, BASIS provides BBx® developers with another tool to take on true enterprise computing. Users with intensive data requirements, such as insurance companies, banks and health care providers, will find 64-bit file support the answer to information explosion.
